Fourth Annual Sturgeon Spectacular Returns February 5-10, 2019

Lake Winnebago Region to host Midwest’s winter festival and international competition

Fond du Lac, Wis. – January 3, 2019

The quirky and renowned Sturgeon Spectacular will return to the Lake Winnebago region in eastern Wisconsin on February 5-10, 2019.

Located along the southern shores of Lake Winnebago and all throughout Fond du Lac, Wisconsin’s downtown district, Sturgeon Spectacular is a weeklong celebration of the mammoth lake sturgeon and includes events on the ice, off the ice, indoors and outdoors, from sunrise to well past sunset. Lake sturgeon is a historic fish that can grow to more than seven feet long, 200 pounds and live for decades, even past 100 years old.

“The sturgeon season has always been such an exciting time in the region. The addition of Sturgeon Spectacular has been an absolute success from the very start,” explained Craig Molitor, president and chief executive officer, Destination Lake Winnebago Region.

This year, the World Ice and Snow Sailing Championships (WISSA) is returning to the United States and will kick-off Sturgeon Spectacular in a grand way. WISSA is the longest running international competition in the sport of windsurfing. Athletes from Estonia, Sweden, Montreal, Russia, Switzerland, Lithuania and across the United States have already registered to sail the frozen Lake Winnebago and delight international spectators in Wisconsin.

“This is a family friendly festival, and with more than 50 unique events, folks of all ages will find plenty to keep them entertained,” added Molitor.

New for 2019

Downtown Curling Funspiel – Learn to curl with Team USA Representatives. This tournament is designed to teach beginners the world of curling in a non-competitive environment. The single elimination tournament will be held on a special rink, created just for Sturgeon Spectacular by flooding a section of the downtown district.

Returning Fan Favorite

Wisconsin Snow Sculpting Championship – The best snow sculptors in Wisconsin and surrounding region travel to Fond du Lac to compete in this championship for a trip to the 2020 US Championships and a cash prize.

Sturgeon Spectacular is made possible through a presenting sponsorship from Alliant Energy and is coordinated by Destination Lake Winnebago Region for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Many hotels, retailers and restaurants have planned specials to make the festival even more attractive and a reason to stay.

“In three short years, Sturgeon Spectacular has quickly become a Wisconsin winter ‘must-do’,” shared Peter Wilke, director of marketing and events, Destination Lake Winnebago Region. “We’ve infused even more fun into this year’s Sturgeon Spectacular and anticipate it becoming a Midwest winter ‘must do’ as a result.”
